Plastic bags are everywhere—and that's the problem. They drift down our streets, choke our oceans, and break down into microplastics that invade our food, water, and air. But it doesn’t have to be this way. With one policy shift—a national $1 charge on plastic bags—we can turn the tide on plastic pollution.
What We’re Fighting For
Our mission is to pass legislation that creates a nationwide $1 minimum charge on all plastic bags—and ensures that 100% of that money goes directly to environmental non-profit organizations like the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the Sierra Club.
We’re not just advocating for a fee. We’re advocating for a system that funds long-term climate solutions, reduces everyday plastic consumption, and empowers people to make more sustainable choices. Every dollar collected won’t just discourage waste—it will protect the very ecosystems that give us life.
Why It Matters
Americans use over 100 billion plastic bags every year. Most are used for less than 15 minutes and then discarded, often ending up in landfills, waterways, or oceans—where they can last for up to 500 years. Countries like Ireland and Denmark have already proven that small fees create massive change. It’s time the U.S. caught up.
We’ve seen it firsthand in New York. After our statewide ban went into effect in 2020, litter visibly decreased, and communities adapted quickly. If one state can make that kind of impact, imagine what we can do together—nationwide.

The Sierra Club leads grassroots efforts across all 50 states to protect wild places, push for clean energy, and advocate for meaningful environmental legislation.
By fueling these organizations with a consistent stream of funding, this policy turns an everyday transaction into a national environmental investment.
